Perhaps it was Qin Zhong’s persistent muttering that took effect. The van slid straight ahead, picking up speed. After about twenty meters, it surprisingly reached the pace of a brisk walk, luckily without any obstacles along the way.

The van passed through the intersection, the road becoming steeper and the speed increasing further. The front of the vehicle made continuous crashing sounds, “crackling and snapping” as it knocked aside a dozen or so obstructing zombies.

Qin Zhong stared intently through the glass at the scene ahead. Unfortunately, without the car keys, the steering wheel was firmly locked, preventing him from controlling the direction. Otherwise, if he could have started the van, he might have managed a successful escape.

As the van’s path veered off straight, it began scraping against the curb. The body jolted violently before slamming to a halt with a loud “bang” under a streetlamp.

The impact made the lamp post shake violently, wobble twice, and then slowly topple over.

The series of noises had already alerted the nearby zombies. Like bees drawn to nectar, they eagerly surged forward, surrounding the van.

Seeing the vehicle stop, Qin Zhong dared not hesitate. He kicked open the door fiercely and jumped out. Under the bright moonlight, a horde of zombies was closing in from all directions.

Glancing around briefly, Qin Zhong’s face turned pale. There were at least two to three hundred of them. If he were surrounded, death was inevitable!

What to do? What to do?

He quickly scanned the surroundings: shops lined both sides of the street, but escaping into them would likely lead to the same grim fate. Feeling a pang of despair, Qin Zhong thought, This is it—I’m going to die again; there’s no way out.

Just then, a loud “boom” rang out.

Qin Zhong turned his head and saw the leaning streetlamp he had just knocked over, now propped against a nearby commercial-residential building. The first floor housed a mall, and the second floor was residential. The lamp post had smashed through a second-floor window and extended inside.

He thought, Fate has not abandoned me; this must be a sign from above!

Without hesitation, Qin Zhong dashed over, climbed up the lamp post, and hurriedly slipped through the window. Looking back, he saw zombies gathered beneath the lamp post, craning their necks and howling, but their stiff legs prevented them from climbing up.

Thankfully, thankfully!

Seeing this, Qin Zhong’s pounding heart finally eased a bit. Once again, he had narrowly escaped death. He examined the room—it was a bedroom, neatly arranged with bedding, and a wedding photo hanging above the bedside.

In the photo, a handsome man and a beautiful woman smiled radiantly. But strangely, in this grim setting, Qin Zhong felt no joy at the sight—only a chilling sense of coldness.

Outside, dawn was breaking. After inspecting the bedroom, Qin Zhong quietly cracked the door open and peered out with one eye.

Suddenly, a startled cry escaped him. He slammed the door shut. Just outside stood a female corpse, her gaze icy and terrifying. As soon as he opened the door, their eyes met.

With a loud “bang,” before Qin Zhong could close the door fully, a powerful force slammed against it, shaking him back several steps until he fell flat on the ground.

Despite being only about 1.6 meters tall compared to Qin Zhong’s 1.8 meters, the female corpse’s strength was terrifying.

Qin Zhong scrambled up without hesitation and leapt onto the bed. The corpse lunged into the room—it was unmistakably the woman from the wedding photo, now grotesquely disfigured by the transformation, her face twisted with rage and horror, no trace of her former beauty or sweetness.

Her dead, iron-blue face snarled fiercely, and just one glance was enough to make Qin Zhong avert his eyes in fear.

The female corpse emitted a low growl from deep in her throat and lunged forward, nearly grabbing Qin Zhong’s legs. Missing her target, she fell onto the bed, momentarily stiff and unable to rise immediately.

Seizing the moment, Qin Zhong stomped on her back, vaulted toward the bedroom door, and escaped, slamming it shut behind him and locking her inside.

Soon, frantic scratching and pounding sounded from behind the door. Sweat beaded on Qin Zhong’s forehead as he gripped the doorknob tightly, fearing she might break out.

Fortunately, zombies lack the intelligence to open doors. After a chaotic “crackling” noise, the sounds subsided.

Feeling the shift in the room’s atmosphere, Qin Zhong slowly released the doorknob, secretly relieved that the zombies didn’t know how to open doors.

Moreover, zombies have no more memory span than goldfish. Within ten seconds of banging, the room fell silent.

Still cautious, Qin Zhong looked around and dragged over a dining table and coffee table to barricade the bedroom door.

Unsatisfied with the barricade, he moved a single sofa onto the pile, blocking the door completely.

Only then did Qin Zhong exhale deeply.

After the tension passed, looking at the heavy furniture he’d moved alone, he marveled at his own strength.

“Perhaps near-death experiences awaken hidden potential. Looks like I have the makings of a superhero!” he mused, secretly mocking himself.

Having done all this, Qin Zhong dared not rest long. He anxiously checked the remaining rooms—a spare bedroom, a study, the kitchen, and the bathroom—ensuring no other “occupants” remained before collapsing onto the sofa.

Exhausted and frightened, his whole body felt weak, unable to even lift a pinky finger. His earlier courage and strength seemed to have drained away completely.

From the master bedroom came occasional zombie groans. Wiping cold sweat from his brow, Qin Zhong thought that if the female corpse remained trapped, he could stay here for a while to recover from his injuries before returning to the refuge to seek revenge.

The room was clean and tidy; the floor spotless; all the furniture new and gleaming. It was clear the woman of the house was diligent. A bright red “I'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
