Chapter 11: The Wolves’ Mindset Collapses!
All those aligned with the Dragon’s Gun felt a heavy weight upon their hearts. Each of them was somewhat unsettled, their minds clouded with anxiety. They could only pray that Kuang Li was truly the Seer. If that were the case, Wang Changsheng’s poisoning of the real Seer would surely cost him dearly. And if the good side lost in the end, their team’s score would never surpass theirs. They still had a chance to advance!
Yet whether Player Three was genuinely the Seer remained uncertain. They could only watch silently, their gazes fixed almost entirely on the large screen.
At that moment, the judge announced, “All players have finished speaking. Are there any players choosing to withdraw their votes?”
“Three... two... one...”
“Players withdrawing their votes are Number Six, Number Seven, and Number Eleven.”
“Players still holding votes are Number Three and Number Ten.”
“Now, the Captain’s public vote begins. Please cast your votes.”
As the judge’s voice faded, the players who had not withdrawn their votes hastily cast their ballots.
“Players One and Nine vote for Number Three.”
“Players Two, Four, Five, Eight, and Twelve vote for Number Ten.”
“Player Ten is elected Captain.”
At the judge’s pronouncement, a shining golden badge appeared instantly on Player Ten’s shoulder. After all, this was a game played within virtual space, with the system-controlled judge managing the process—everything was seamless.
Wang Changsheng was not surprised that the captain’s badge fell to Player Ten. Although Player Three’s speech was decent, it revolved around a low-probability scenario. He also insisted there were three to four wolves among those holding votes, which, from the perspective of the external good players, was somewhat unreasonable.
Player Ten’s strong endorsement of Number Eleven as trustworthy was compelling. Except for the somewhat stubborn Player Nine and the wolf who had self-voted and been verified as safe, Player One, both the external good players and wolves cast their votes for Player Ten.
“One charging forward, one countering—just barely passable,” Wang Changsheng chuckled quietly to himself.
The judge then began to announce the casualties from the previous night.
“Players who died last night, in no particular order: Number One and Number Three.”
Upon hearing this, everyone except Wang Changsheng was stunned.
Especially the wolves. Seeing both Players One and Three fall, their faces involuntarily displayed confusion and disbelief—reactions impossible to hide.
The wolves swallowed nervously, unsure why this had happened. The Witch had chosen not to save anyone the first night and had even used poison?
Kuang Li didn’t dare look at the judge’s prompt about the shooting status. At that moment, he felt like a drowning man submerged in water, struggling to breathe.
It wasn’t just him. The suffocating sensation as if one’s throat were being strangled filled the entire wolf team with despair.
Thankfully, their bodies lay safely within the game pods, their consciousness immersed in the virtual space. This greatly reduced the risk of fainting or sudden illness caused by emotional upheaval.
“The situation… how could it be like this?” Kuang Li’s mind shattered.
Player One’s self-vote could have been a deliberate counterattack—an ultimate deep-cover wolf with a verified safe identity. Even if voted for, it wouldn’t have mattered much; at worst, they’d lose one Witch vote.
Yet, the judge’s announcement was unbearable to accept. The Witch not only refrained from saving but had also turned to poison him!
Who was the fool holding the Witch role? Could it be Player Nine, who had voted for him? What an utterly foolish bastard!
What use was voting for him now? The Witch neither used the antidote last night nor hesitated to poison him. Damn it, damn it, damn it!
Not only Kuang Li but also the other wolves gasped sharply. Still, being professionals, they quickly composed themselves. But the true feelings within their hearts—only they would know.
Contrasting with the wolves’ despair, the good players, excluding Wang Changsheng, initially believed the wolves had been precise, eliminating the Witch on the first night.
Typically, when double deaths occur on the first night, it means the Witch has been attacked and cannot use the antidote on themselves and must risk poisoning someone to exit, lest they suffer a significant round loss.
The Guard rarely risks protecting someone on the first night unless confident they can protect the Witch; otherwise, if they guard correctly but the Witch uses the antidote, the healer would be exposed.
The good players began brainstorming, initially convinced that Player One was the Witch who had been killed and had poisoned the suspected Seer, Player Three.
If Player Three was truly the Seer, then the good side was off to a catastrophic start, losing two key roles outright. How could they possibly continue?
However, considering another possibility, Player Three might have been a wolf masquerading as the Seer. So if Player One’s poison was accurate, the good team wouldn’t be off to a perfect start but at least wouldn’t have lost rounds.
Both possibilities hinged on whether Player Three was truly the Seer.
For a moment, all eyes turned toward Kuang Li.
“Player Three, please deliver your final words.”
Damn! Kuang Li took a deep breath, forcing his expression under control. Though he clearly saw from his perspective that the wolf team was bleeding heavily this round, he could not simply surrender.
He had to keep fighting! Even if only a sliver of hope remained, he could not give up!
This was not merely about esports spirit, but also because if they lost this 48-to-24 qualifier, the Dragon’s Gun team would be kicked out.
They wouldn’t even make the national tournament, let alone the world championship!
Suppressing his frustration and the burning urge to curse the Witch’s incompetence, Kuang Li instead wore an expression of incredulous regret.
“Player One, I verified you as a safe role, yet you were killed, and you poisoned me in return?”
He scanned the room, his gaze intense, his words sincere: “This round is truly difficult for the good side. The captain’s badge is in the hands of the wolves, and both the Witch and the Seer are out.”
“I am the Seer. I believe I was not the one attacked—likely my verified safe role was killed, and then I was poisoned.”
“When I spoke during the captain’s phase, I already suspected Player One was faking their role. I thought they were a wolf, but the verification showed they were safe. That means Player One must be the Witch, and with me out, only the Guard and Hunter remain.”
“I urge these two sacred roles to stay hidden! We still have a chance to win this round!”
“Listen carefully to my next words!”
