Chapter 29: The World-Ending Witch, Advancing to the Top 24!
Inside the "Surrender Your Thoughts" team room, Huang Manmiao was overwhelmed with excitement as she gazed at the massive score displayed on the screen.
Wang Changsheng had only been promoted from the substitute roster to the official national tournament lineup because their last veteran player, Wei Gou, had been poached by the "Spear Like a Dragon" team. Driven by necessity, they had been forced to settle for the best of what remained, putting Wang Changsheng into the starting lineup. Yet, who could have predicted that Wang Changsheng, not even an official starter, would lead their team to successfully qualify for the Top 24 in a national tournament?
And more than that! This match had garnered unanimous recommendation from all the judges, securing a staggering score of 10 points—breaking the highest historical record since the inception of the WPL!
Although luck played a certain role in Werewolf, it mattered not. At this moment, the "Surrender Your Thoughts" team would be etched into the history of Werewolf solely because of Wang Changsheng.
Huang Manmiao laughed incessantly. "That 'Spear Like a Dragon' bunch was only four points ahead of us, and now little Wang has just earned a full ten points! With the way their wolf team played, they’ll probably have points deducted! Hahahaha! Daring to poach my player? I’ll show you what poaching gets you!"
"You can just pack your bags and exit the national and world tournaments!"
Huang Manmiao’s high spirits were infectious, and the rest of the team became equally thrilled. In every other team’s room, the expressions of the coaches and players were much the same—everyone was stunned by such a high score.
In the "Godslayer" team room, the coach sat on the sofa, not even looking at the screen, and asked the team member beside him, "How many points did Zigao get?"
"He... because he misidentified the targets and didn't really contribute anything else, even though he drew the Seer, he... he only got three points for his faction," a short-haired player replied, glancing at the screen with a hint of hesitation.
The Godslayer coach sighed slightly. "I’ve told you all before: when you’re analyzing logic, listen to other people’s opinions. Don't always be stubborn and stick only to your own perspective. You just wouldn't listen..." He shook his head, his expression one of utter helplessness. "Wasn't this match supposed to be easy points? If we could have seized the opportunity to gain a bit more, we might have climbed several spots in the rankings."
He knew his players well. He didn't know who had started it, but each of them was more willing to stubbornly trust their own logic until they hit a brick wall. Sometimes this was a good trait—they weren't easily swayed or deceived by werewolves—but other times... the coach sighed again.
At this point, the commentators began summarizing the ratings for all the players.
Player 1 (Werewolf): Committed suicide on the first night, feigned being the Witch, but failed to influence any outcomes. Nothing to show for it. Score: -3.
Player 2 (Villager): Stood on the right side and questioned Players 5 and 6, but cast a vote that exiled a fellow Villager. Mediocre. Score: +3.
Player 3 (Wolf Gunner): Attempted to bluff as the Seer with a gun, but almost no one believed him; he was identified by the Witch on the first day and poisoned to death. Nothing to show for it. Score: -4.
Player 4 (Hunter): Stood on the right side, identified Player 5 as a werewolf, and voted for them, though the exile failed due to other players. After being killed on the final night, he used his gun to take out the last werewolf. Outstanding. Score: +5.
Player 5 (Werewolf): Though he planned a good strategy with his wolf teammates, a major misjudgment of the roles in external positions led to the total collapse of the wolf team. Nothing to show for it. Score: -3.
Player 6 (Werewolf): With the wolf team at a severe disadvantage, he worked closely with his last teammate, but due to trusting his teammate’s judgment and the signals from the day, he feigned being the Hunter, only to be exposed by the Witch (Player 7) and forced to blow himself up. Nothing to show for it. Score: -3.
Player 7 (Witch): Identified Player 1 as a wolf on the first night, chose not to use the healing potion, and instead poisoned the Wolf Gunner (Player 3), gaining a massive advantage for the good guys. During the discussion phase, he forced Players 5 and 6 to reveal themselves, voted correctly every time, and kept his identity completely hidden. This led the werewolves to make critical mistakes, resulting in a peaceful night and the elimination of three out of four werewolves. A world-class performance. Score: +10!
Player 8 (Guard): Stood on the right side but voted incorrectly and failed to protect anyone. Mediocre. Score: +3.
Player 9 (Villager): While everyone else stood on the right side, he cast the wrong vote for the Sheriff badge and failed to defend himself properly during the discussion, leading to his exile. Nothing to show for it. Score: +3.
Player 10 (Seer): Checked a "gold water" but refused to listen to their advice, forcing the exile of Player 9. Suspected 7 and 9 were both wolves and chose to check Player 7, but the final investigation yielded nothing. Nothing to show for it. Score: +3.
Player 11 (Villager): As a villager without perspective, he stood on the right side from the start and gave the Seer excellent advice, but his efforts were wasted on the wrong people, and he voted to exile a good guy. Commendable. Score: +4.
Player 12 (Villager): From a villager's perspective, his side, votes, and speech were all correct. Commendable. Score: +4.
Because of Player 3 (Kuang Li), the "Spear Like a Dragon" team found themselves with a net negative, directly pushing them out of the Top 24. They were honorably eliminated!
The final spot was claimed by "Surrender Your Thoughts." And that wasn't all; thanks to Wang Changsheng’s 10 points, "Surrender Your Thoughts" climbed another 15 spots, landing directly in tenth place!
The entire venue erupted. The two commentators shouted with passion, "Congratulations! Congratulations to 'Surrender Your Thoughts' for becoming one of the Top 24 teams in the WPL 2023 National Werewolf Tournament!"
"This was the final spot in the Top 24! Now, they have the qualification to take the place of 'Spear Like a Dragon' and continue forward!"
"Can 'Surrender Your Thoughts' make it to the National Finals, or even the World Tournament? Let us wait and see!"
The audience was cheering wildly.
"That was simply badass! He literally extended the life of his team! As expected of Changsheng!"
"'Surrender Your Thoughts' only had 24 points, four points behind 'Spear Like a Dragon' who were in 24th place! But now, 'Spear Like a Dragon' lost four points, while 'Surrender Your Thoughts' jumped all the way to 34 points! Ranked tenth!"
"This is nothing short of changing one's destiny! They’ll definitely let him play the next match, right? No, I have to see him play!"
"Changsheng! Changsheng! I’m a fan of Changsheng from now on! Is that the official account name for 'Surrender Your Thoughts'? I’m going to follow them!"
"What’s my brother Changsheng’s real name? Why didn't I see it? Why is 'Surrender Your Thoughts' so slow with their updates! I want all the information on my brother Changsheng within one minute!"
