Chapter 51 Looking for Trouble?
"I made it very clear to Luo Zhiming that our personalities are incompatible and he shouldn't waste his time on me, but he just won't listen!"
"Isn't that just because he likes you so much?" As soon as the woman said this, Luo Zhiming's friends chimed in one after another.
"Yeah, look at our little Luo here. He's handsome, refined, and his family is quite well-off."
The conversation had been going smoothly until suddenly, for reasons beyond comprehension, that same woman abruptly shifted her target to Yang Jie.
"Look at this big brute, what's so good about him? Nothing he's wearing probably costs even a hundred bucks, and no designer brands either. Are you planning to keep a kept boy?"
Another friend immediately picked up the cue, "Actually, there's nothing wrong with keeping a kept boy, but keeping a Lu Zhishen? That's just asking for a joke."
Instantly, Luo Zhiming's circle of friends burst into laughter.
Yang Jie's eyebrows shot up. What the hell? He was just minding his own business eating melons, yet somehow the drama landed right on him.
When has Yang Jie ever taken a loss without retaliating? He immediately stood up, his tower-like frame casting a shadow down over the people before him.
Even when sitting, Yang Jie's physical build was already imposing, but the moment he stood up, those five or six weaklings felt as though even the overhead lights had been completely blocked out.
Yang Jie reached out, grabbed the provocative woman by the neck, and hauled her over. The corner of his mouth curved upward in a rebellious and arrogant smirk.
"Bitch, how do you want to die?"
Seized by the throat with a grip like iron pliers, the woman's face flushed completely red, leaving her unable to utter a single syllable.
Seeing this unfold, her boyfriend's eyes turned instantly bloodshot, and he wanted to charge forward to fight Yang Jie to the death.
However, the moment he met Yang Jie's gaze—the look one gives a dead man—his entire body shuddered, and the courage that had just welled up receded like the tide.
He shuffled his feet nervously, ultimately failing to take that step forward.
"Stop right there!"
At that moment, a woman rushed straight over and shouted loudly at Yang Jie.
Yang Jie frowned and slowly relaxed his grip. The woman collapsed directly to the floor, coughing violently.
Ever since his body had been enhanced, Yang Jie's memory was extraordinary. With a brief moment of thought, he recalled the identity of the newcomer.
"Oh, if it isn't Officer Wang?"
This was the female police officer from right after he had first returned to the country.
Today, however, dressed in a floral midi dress with her hair cascading down, she looked rather playful and cute.
"Making trouble the moment you return to the country? Don't forget the agreement you signed!"
Yang Jie shrugged and immediately recounted everything that had just transpired. He was certainly not the type to take a beating without striking back, and Officer Wang immediately cast a disgruntled glare toward the group of individuals.
"When you're out there provoking others, do you ever bother checking their strength first?"
Chastised in such a manner, those people fell silent at once. Officer Wang couldn't help a sigh of resignation; people native to Shanghai tended to possess two minor flaws. The first was a natural sense of condescension toward outsiders.
Though as the younger generation grew up, this atmosphere had diminished somewhat. The second flaw was that among those who considered themselves high-net-worth individuals—those earning tens of thousands a month—they held a profound contempt for ordinary folks earning just a few thousand.
Officer Wang pointed at the watch on Yang Jie's wrist. "This watch is Richard Mille's latest men's model, with an official retail price of two million US dollars! Don't go judging a book by its cover next time!"
Hearing the price of the watch, the crowd—who had initially been reluctant to let the matter drop—instantly fell silent and scurried away as if fleeing for their lives.
Whether judging by physical combat prowess or the other party's intrinsic influence, these were people they could never afford to provoke.
The poor play with cars, the rich play with watches, and losers play with computers. What was the concept of two million US dollars? That amounted to fourteen million RMB. Even with the conditions of Luo Zhiming's family, it would be impossible to mobilize such a massive cash flow in a short period of time.
Let alone using that kind of cash flow to purchase a wristwatch!
"There are only two of you, do you mind if I sit here?"
Without waiting for a reply, Officer Wang sat down right beside Yang Jie. Her tone sounded like a polite inquiry, but in reality, she left Yang Jie no room for refusal whatsoever.
"Pfft!"
At that exact moment, Zhan Ting burst out laughing.
Yang Jie and Officer Wang both turned their gazes toward Zhan Ting, expressions on their faces clearly asking: *What on earth are you laughing at?*
Zhan Ting covered her mouth with a light chuckle. "So—sorry, I really couldn't hold it in. The two of you sitting together looks so utterly incongruous!"
Glancing sideways at Officer Wang, Yang Jie grinned broadly.
Officer Wang wore a look of utter helplessness. Among southern women, she was already considered quite tall at 168 centimeters, but standing beside the two individuals before her, she was no different from a dwarf.
Yang Jie glanced at her dismissively.
"I don't believe we're friends, Officer Wang! Right now, I require a relatively quiet environment to chat with my friend."
"Call me Wang Nianwei."
"Huh? And?" Yang Jie appeared somewhat impatient.
Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, Wang Nianwei smiled cheerfully.
"You harbor a great deal of hostility toward me!"
Yang Jie motioned for the waiter to bring a few more dishes, then chuckled.
"When dealing with the law enforcement apparatus of an unfamiliar place, I am forced to exercise a degree of caution!"
Wang Nianwei wore a completely bewildered expression.
"Why do you speak as if you're living in an American TV show? As long as you don't break the law, what do you have to be afraid of?"
Before long, the dishes were served, and Wang Nianwei dug right in without the slightest bit of pretension.
"I've always been curious—when you were slaughtering women and children, didn't you feel even a shred of pity or hesitation?"
Instantly, both Yang Jie and Zhan Ting froze in their tracks. Yang Jie's expression darkened; his instincts had been correct, this woman was definitely unhinged and had come here purely to pick a fight.
Wang Nianwei had simply been out shopping today, never expecting to run into Yang Jie. As she had grown more deeply acquainted with this particular group's line of work and reviewed their files, she discovered something startling.
The things this group had done in the past were more villainous than the ultimate villains in movies. For a long time, she simply couldn't fathom how human beings could commit such cruel acts without a bottom line.
This restaurant was quite nice; although it wasn't a private dining room, it was divided into individual semi-private booths. Yang Jie rolled up his short-sleeved shirt, revealing a physique covered entirely in scars.
Upon seeing Yang Jie's musculature, Wang Nianwei paused, her complexion flushing slightly pink, only to notice that the muscles were riddled with scars.
"On the battlefield, as long as they carry a weapon, they aren't women and children—they are soldiers! Back then, some idiot tried to persuade me not to fire, and that kid immediately whipped out a submachine gun. I damn near lost my life right there!"
Wang Nianwei frowned. Although she had just recently graduated, she was not the type to be overly sanctimonious, and she immediately asked, "That wouldn't have been one of your teammates, would it? How could they be so amateurish?"
Yang Jie pointed across the table. "Right there, behold this saintly figure. Thanks to her benevolence, I nearly bit the dust."
Zhan Ting shrugged, her face a mask of bitter irony.
"Don't bring that up, you've been chewing me out for this for years! I've learned my lesson now, alright?"
"Hmph, I damn near bought the farm back then!"
Just as Yang Jie was about to pull his shirt back down, Wang Nianwei, as if driven by some inexplicable impulse, extended her finger and pressed it against his sculptural muscle.
"What are you doing?"
"Nothing!"
Her cheeks blazing red, Wang Nianwei instantly withdrew her hand. "I—I've always enjoyed watching American TV shows, but I've never actually been to the United States. So I'm quite curious about that place, and equally curious about your experiences."
"Sometimes I can't help wondering... why are you people so cold-blooded?"
