Chapter 54 Peripheral Member: He Found Me!
Observer, silent!
The expression of another perimeter operative holding the walkie-talkie and attempting to assess the situation instantly shifted.
The explosion just moments ago had originated from somewhere on one of the floors of the office building.
And now, the observer had answered the channel yet remained completely silent; they had likely already been killed!
With such a loud commotion, someone must have already called the police, meaning they had to resolve the situation here before the authorities arrived!
Without needing further instruction, the perimeter operatives on the upper and lower floors simultaneously drew their firearms.
They prepared to head up to the floor from which the explosion had emanated to see what was happening.
Clack-clack, clack-clack, clack-clack.
The sound of footsteps in the hallway gradually grew chaotic and overlapping.
For a moment, it was impossible to tell exactly how many people were walking down the corridor.
Leaving a three-man team behind on both the upper and lower floors to provide rear support, the rest of the operatives advanced toward the stairwell with extreme vigilance, fully prepared to engage in combat with the mysterious intruder at any second.
Watching the main force head toward the stairwell to investigate the floor above the blast, one member of the three-man rear-guard team braced himself. He raised his pistol, sweeping the muzzle continuously across the rooms on this level.
They had already locked every single room. Should anyone attempt to enter through a window,
they would have no choice but to use brute force to kick it open.
And the moment a window was kicked open, it would inevitably produce a sound—
At that point, they would not hesitate to fire warning shots and surround and annihilate the mysterious intruder!
This perimeter operative’s gaze was sharp and alert, his heartbeat accelerating significantly.
Then, he heard the sound of wind blowing from somewhere in the corridor—
Yet, all the windows had been securely locked; how could there be the sound of wind?
Instantly, he glanced at the other two perimeter operatives. They nodded in response, and the three of them maintained a tactical, defensive posture as they moved toward the room where the sound of wind had originated.
Clack-clack, clack-clack, clack-clack.
The footsteps of the main force had already vanished from this level; now, only the footsteps of the three of them remained here.
Reaching the room that emitted the faint sound of wind, the operative shrank his body slightly, thrusting his head forward while raising his gun to aim at every corner of the interior, terrified that missing a spot would lead to his death!
However, there seemed to be nothing inside.
The window there appeared not to have been latched properly when it was originally locked, and had been blown open by the violent shockwave from the explosion on the floor above.
A wave of relief washed over the perimeter operative. He stepped into the room, reached out to grab both sides of the window frame, and prepared to lock it.
Then, he felt a sharp pain in the back of his neck and stumbled forward. Instead of closing the window, he shoved it wide open.
The two perimeter operatives behind him immediately realized that the intruder had already made a move.
They were just about to pull the triggers of their firearms to sound the alarm when they saw a figure dash out from the window like a ghost. Two flashes of sharp silver light swept across their wrists and throats almost simultaneously!
Thud, thud.
The dull thuds of corpses hitting the floor echoed out.
Nara Guang flicked both hands, and the droplets of blood on the blades of the eagle-claw hooks attached to his arms were instantly shaken off, leaving them looking as pristine and bright as new. He retracted the weapons back into his sleeves. From the outside, one could never tell that such lethal devices were concealed within his cuffs!
He stepped over the bodies of the two organization perimeter operatives and grabbed the firearms bag slung across his back.
Rip—
Pulling the zipper open, the most conspicuous item inside the bag, compared to the two slightly bulkier sniper rifles, was a relatively compact firearm—the submachine gun taken from Pisco’s automotive company!
He drew the submachine gun from the bag and zipped it back up with a reverse motion.
He walked toward the stairwell at a leisurely, unhurried pace, checking the condition of the submachine gun along the way and pulling back the magazine to confirm that the bullet count matched his memory.
Meanwhile, up on the stairwell of the upper floor, the perimeter operatives of the Black Organization had already located the source of the explosion—
A room, charred completely black after being consumed by the flames of the blast!
The lead perimeter operative caught the stench of burning flesh generated by the explosion, and his expression turned exceptionally grim.
With just a quick glance at the nearby bodies of his comrades who had been caught directly in the blast and blown to pieces, he could conclude that almost all the perimeter operatives on this floor had likely been wiped out instantly by the explosive device detonated inside that room!
"Looks like a tripwire-triggered explosive trap... An explosive charge of this magnitude shouldn't be easy to acquire. Was it a homemade satchel charge?"
Assessing the situation, the perimeter operative muttered in a low voice.
Afterward, he looked toward the other operatives who had emerged from the various rooms on this floor and returned to the hallway.
Unsurprisingly, those operatives all shook their heads, indicating they had found nothing.
Seeing this, he drew the communicator clipped to his waist.
Then, switching to the channel for the three-man backup team stationed on the floor below, he asked calmly,
"The dangerous individual was not found on the fifth floor. Are there any unexpected developments on the fourth floor?"
No reply.
Yet sometimes, no reply was an answer in itself.
The expression of the perimeter operative changed instantly, and he shouted,
"Damn it! Yanshuangying is downstairs! The brothers stationed down there as backup have all been killed by him!"
"We must get down there immediately! Otherwise, if he blows up the stairwell here and guards the other one, we’ll be trapped like turtles in a jar!"
For a single person to surround a dozen or so well-trained, armed perimeter operatives of the Black Organization?
Such a claim would sound laughable. Even ordinary people carrying firearms, firing continuously at a single target in a chaotic volley, would be enough to gun that person down. How could it possibly be the other way around, with one man surrounding them?
Yet when the operative uttered those words, none of the numerous perimeter operatives in the corridor held any doubts.
The horrific carnage inside the automotive company of the organization's veteran member Pisco had already demonstrated just how terrifying and spine-chilling the urban legend known as Yanshuangying truly was!
Most of them immediately turned back toward their previous stairwell, while a detachment split off to head toward the alternate stairwell.
Splitting up! With communicators to maintain contact and coordinate with one another, if the enemy possessed explosives, this approach was safer than moving as a collective mob!
Clack-clack, clack-clack, clack-clack.
Hasty footsteps resounded through the scorched fifth-floor corridor.
Then, those hurried footsteps abruptly stopped.
Replacing them was the sound of a single set of footsteps.
Footsteps ascending from the stairwell between the fourth and fifth floors.
"It's him! He's here!"
The perimeter operative immediately tensed up, shouting as he raised his firearm to aim.
The other members mirrored his actions—
The next instant.
Something flew out from the corner of the stairwell, bounced off the wall with a sharp impact, and hurled directly toward the corridor!
Boom!
The homemade grenade detonated violently!
Amidst the blinding flames of the explosion, countless submachine gun rounds tore through the air, hurtling toward the perimeter operatives in the hallway!
In the blink of an eye, ninety percent of the operatives who had escaped the blast radius of the homemade grenade were killed!
Only two or three survivors managed to scramble into nearby rooms, barely clinging to life.
The lead operative who had scouted the path earlier and brought up the rear during the retreat pulled out his communicator and yelled,
"Yanshuangying has homemade grenades! He's on the fifth floor! He's on the fifth floor!"
"He—"
A pistol was pressed against his forehead before he could finish.
Meanwhile, his two remaining companions had already collapsed to the floor, throwing knives embedded deep in their throats.
The perimeter operative slowly raised his head, catching sight of the urban legend's sunglasses-clad face.
"—found me."
Bang!
The corpse hit the floor!
