“It’s so late. Who could possibly be coming?” Liao Shuxia rubbed her eyes and asked in confusion.

Lin Wenyan went over and opened the door. To his surprise, the person outside dropped to his knees before them without saying a word.

Lin Wenyan was startled.

Looking more closely, he realized that the person kneeling there was Lin Xiong.

“What are you doing?” Lin Wenyan frowned. “Get up, quickly!”

What would the neighbors think if they saw this?

“Waaah, Cousin, please save my sister!” Lin Xiong sobbed miserably. “She’s been locked up!”

Mu Rong Xiu had already imprisoned Hou Tianlu and Lin Shuimei at the Mu Rong residence.

She would probably torment them thoroughly as well.

Lin Xiong had panicked the moment he heard about it. He depended on Lin Shuimei to support him. If anything really happened to her, what would become of him?

“So what?” Lin Beitao came over and said, “She brought this upon herself. Besides, we’re not the ones who locked her up. What good will begging us do?”

“But—but I can’t find anyone else!” Lin Xiong cried desperately.

He had only managed to find the address of Lin Sangqian’s home after begging everyone he could think of for help.

“That has nothing to do with us. Leave!”

“I’m not leaving! If you refuse to help me, I’ll stay here and cry. Let’s see what you do about it!” Lin Xiong’s expression suddenly changed, and he spoke viciously.

Lin Sangqian had been watching coldly from the side. Now, she laughed.

Lin Xiong really was Lin Shengrong and Lai Ruyu’s son. He had inherited every bit of his parents’ character.

If he had merely been an ordinary child, there would have been no harm in the Lin family taking him in. They could afford to raise him now, after all.

But someone like Lin Xiong…

They had no interest in him.

“You—you’re shameless!” Lin Beitao’s face flushed with anger.

“Either you rescue my sister, or you take me in and provide me with food and shelter!” Lin Xiong became even more brazen.

“If you want to cry, then cry here,” Lin Sangqian said coldly. “You could cry yourself to death, and no one would care.”

Lin Xiong could not help shivering.

“Big Brother, close the gate.”

Lin Wenyan immediately shut the courtyard gate.

Lin Xiong was stunned. He had never expected Lin Sangqian to be so heartless. Wasn’t she afraid that the neighbors would see this and gossip about the family?

Lin Xiong immediately began howling at the top of his lungs. After only a couple of cries, Lin Sangqian opened the gate a crack and said ominously, “If you want to cry, then cry quietly. Don’t howl. If you disturb the neighbors, I guarantee what happens to you will be worse than what happened to your sister.”

With that, Lin Sangqian slammed the gate shut again.

Lin Xiong remained kneeling outside, mouth hanging open. He neither dared to howl nor stop crying.

In the end, he did not dare make another sound. He squatted silently by the gate, shedding tears and hoping that someone from the Lin family would soften and let him inside.

Unfortunately, no one paid him any attention throughout the entire night.

The next morning, Lin Wenyan came to open the gate and found Lin Xiong curled up against the wall, fast asleep.

Fortunately, it was summer, so spending one night outside was not a serious problem.

Lin Wenyan: “…”

He had not expected Lin Xiong to actually spend the night there.

What perseverance.

“Little Sister, he’s still here. What should we do?” Lin Wenyan turned to look at Lin Sangqian, who was coming out of the house with a yawn.

“Just ignore him,” Lin Sangqian said indifferently.

Trying to gain sympathy by playing the victim? Lin Xiong had chosen the wrong target.

Lin Sangqian had never intended to become some perfectly virtuous and benevolent person. She would lend a hand when someone deserved her help, but when faced with someone she did not want to help, she could be utterly ruthless.

Whether Lin Xiong lived or died had nothing to do with her.

“What happened to this child? Why is he sleeping here?”

Lin Xiong opened his eyes groggily and saw a woman standing before him, looking at him kindly.

“Child, are you all right?”

Lin Xiong scrambled up from the ground and immediately shouted at the top of his lungs, “How could I be all right? The people in this Lin family are heartless! I’m only a child, and I slept outside their door all night, but they didn’t care about me at all! I’m their relative, too!”

“You’re related to the Lin family? Then why didn’t they let you inside?” Auntie Xia asked curiously, a calculating gleam in her eyes.

“Because they’re bad people! They’re cruel and heartless!”

The moment he finished speaking, the door opened. Lin Beitao stepped out and snarled, “Dare to spread any more nonsense, and I’ll tear that mouth of yours apart!”

Lin Xiong let out a frightened yelp and hid behind Auntie Xia.

“Isn’t this the Lin family’s third son? Oh, he’s only a child. You shouldn’t be so harsh with him.” Auntie Xia acted as a mediator.

“I’m a child too,” Lin Beitao declared indignantly. “Anyway, I can’t stand listening to him slander us. I haven’t forgotten how his parents, his sister, and he himself treated our family. He knows perfectly well why we won’t take him in!”

With that, he went back inside and slammed the door shut.

“You,” Lin Wenyan said, poking Lin Beitao on the forehead. “Why are you so easily provoked?”

“I just couldn’t stand it!” Lin Beitao said aggrievedly.

“All right, leave him alone,” Lin Sangqian said with a smile. “Lan’er and Mother have already prepared breakfast. Let’s go eat.”

Outside the gate, Lin Xiong began crying again.

“All right, all right, child. Don’t cry,” Auntie Xia comforted him. “Where is your home? Where are your parents?”

“I—I don’t have a home anymore. My parents were both harmed by Lin Sangqian! My sister was harmed by her too!” Lin Xiong said between sobs.

Auntie Xia’s eyes shifted. “Don’t cry. Come home with me first. I’ll make you something to eat, all right?”

“Mm!” Lin Xiong nodded without the slightest hesitation. He had no money left, had not eaten the night before, and was starving.

Auntie Xia led him home, cooked him a large bowl of noodles, and added two poached eggs.

Lin Xiong devoured them ravenously.

“Mother, where did you pick up this child?” her daughter-in-law asked unhappily. “You even made him noodles! Eggs are so expensive these days! And this child has no manners at all. He didn’t even say thank you!”

“What do you know?” Auntie Xia glared at her. “I have a use for him! Once we get our hands on the Lin family’s treasure, you’ll be able to buy a thousand eggs if you want, and no one will stop you!”

“What can a child possibly do?”

“That’s none of your concern!”

Lin Sangqian and her two older brothers went to Fortune Full Restaurant to deliver chicken feet.

When Yang Shi saw them, he said, “Have you heard? Manager Qin is ill.”

Manager Qin? Qin Zhengde?

“What happened to him?” Lin Sangqian asked hurriedly.

She and Qin Zhengde were fairly good friends. Qin Zhengde often went to McCrispy Chicken to buy fried chicken.

“I don’t know. It’s a strange illness. Even the physician can’t seem to determine where it came from,” Yang Shi said.

“If you ask me, he must have gotten sick from eating at Splendid China Restaurant!” one of the workers nearby cut in.
