Chapter 143: Bringing Good News

A constant stream of messages popped up one after another. Having not logged into the system for the past two days, Wu Tong had quite a backlog. Knowing that Wu Tong was currently focused on her research, Lu Xiao and Yang Wei had refrained from anything urgent, choosing instead to send messages directly to the system for her to review whenever she had a moment.
As Wu Tong opened the messages one by one, a smile blossomed in her eyes. It was time to celebrate.
While she had been immersed in deriving the covalent effect model, Chief Engineer Yang Wei and his core team at the Xi'an Aircraft Industry Corporation (XAC) 614 Institute had been working day and night, racing against time, without wasting a single second.
Finally, on September 27th, they completed the re-fabrication of all the core components using the optimized parameters and successfully replicated the T5 blade material at XAC. Integrating these with the materials they had previously verified, they assembled the WS-15 engine using the new core components. The WS-15 was reborn, ready for testing once more.
Aero-engines operate under extremely harsh conditions, involving high temperatures, high pressures, and high-speed rotation. To enhance the engine's performance, reliability, and lifespan, the team had to fully master its behavior under various conditions—temperature, pressure, corrosion, clearances, and stress—before it could ever be cleared for a test flight on a fighter jet. Thousands of tests were conducted, and not a single detail could be ignored.
Any minor issue on the ground would be magnified infinitely in the sky. The training and lives of pilots are infinitely precious, and the cost of every fighter jet is measured in hundreds of millions. They could not afford a single mistake. The catastrophic outcome of a crash would be a heartbreak they could not bear.
While Wu Tong was lost in her moment of inspiration, the specialized testing equipment at the XAC research institute, thousands of miles away, had been checked repeatedly to ensure total functionality.
Standing in the main control room of the test stand, Yang Wei clenched his fists, holding his breath as he gave the order to commence. After years of hard work and a month of intense effort, the results were about to be revealed. He was both expectant and nervous to see what figures the new generation WS-15 would achieve.
Success would make the performance of the WS-15 a milestone for Chinese aviation and Chinese engines. Failure, on the other hand, would most likely be attributed to human error, wasting vast amounts of capital and resources. It would be a fatal blow to the momentum the entire WS-15 project team had built up.
Time ticked away with every heartbeat of anticipation. The entire 614 Institute hummed with activity, wound tight like a spring. Finally, his assistant engineer ran toward him, face glowing with excitement. Yang Wei’s gaze locked onto him immediately.
"Are the test results in? Are there any problems? Give me the highlights!" Yang Wei’s fingers trembled slightly.
"Report, Chief Yang! The test was a resounding success!" The assistant could not contain his excitement upon seeing the data. "The performance is incredible. The new-generation WS-15 has a dry thrust of approximately 22.7 tons, a maximum thrust of 26.8 tons, and a thrust-to-weight ratio of 15.1. It exceeds our highest expectations and outperforms all our previous simulations!"

"We pushed the turbine inlet temperature to 2,200 degrees, and the fan temperature remained between 1,100 and 1,300 degrees!"
"How are the blades holding up?" In aviation, increasing the temperature by even a hundred degrees is as difficult as reaching the heavens. They had previously only managed around 1,500 to 1,600 degrees. An increase of six or seven hundred degrees was immense; the heat resistance and creep resistance limits of most materials would be far surpassed. Could their new blade material hold up under such extreme conditions?
This temperature was one they had deliberated over for a long time before deciding to push for it.
"No problems at all. The new T5 blade material handled it with ease. All creep and high-temperature deformation were within low, controllable ranges, nowhere near their limits. We even tried pushing it to 2,400 degrees for a while, and it remained stable!" The assistant's voice grew increasingly excited, nearly cracking: "We also inspected the combustion chamber, the turbine, and the high-pressure compressor... their performance was just as excellent as the simulations, if not better!"
The simulation data had already shocked them, but they never expected the real-world results to be even more impressive. High-altitude tests were expected to proceed without a hitch.
"Our WS-15 has truly overcome all its weaknesses; it has been reborn!"
"Good, good, good!" Yang Wei repeated the word three times, his voice trembling. Compared to his assistant, his emotional connection to this engine was much deeper.
The WS-15 was like his own child. He had touched every bolt, every rivet, and every component. He had personally supervised every pipeline and every plate, watching it evolve from a stack of design data into materials, then into components, and finally into the previous iteration of the WS-15.
Like any parent with high hopes for their child, he was no different. Since the birth of the WS-15 in 2006, he had dedicated himself to its improvement, watching it evolve through the second and third generations as materials and technology advanced. He had planned to spend the rest of his life pursuing these improvements.
But he never expected that in just four years—or rather, in just this one month—a "Purple Star" (a gifted genius) would descend, optimizing the parameters and designing the most critical blade materials, giving the WS-15 a new lease on life. It had reached an unprecedented height, surpassing the data he had dreamt of, and achieving figures he hadn't even dared to imagine during his lifelong pursuit!
Tears welled up in his eyes—tears of emotional release. His child had aced its first major exam after its rebirth.
With a choked, trembling voice, he spoke into the control room microphone: "I announce that the ground test of the WS-15S is a perfect success!"

From today on, the new generation of the WS-15 would be renamed the WS-15S. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, high temperature would become its dazzling halo.
Suddenly, cheers erupted from every corner of the research institute. They had succeeded! Their month of hard work had not been in vain. Chinese fighter jets had finally entered a new chapter, having completely overcome their "heart disease."
Their engines were self-reliant, just as the Chinese people were self-reliant! It would shine like a star, illuminating the world and making everyone look up in awe at its divine radiance.
Yang Wei could not calm down for a long time. While his assistant went out to compile more detailed data, Yang Wei returned to his office. His first act was to log into the system and send his sincerest gratitude and the freshly baked good news to their benefactor, who had given the WS-15S the power of rebirth—their chief consultant, Wu Tong.
If he could, he would truly love to thank their "Purple Star" in person.
After transmitting the latest data and status report, Yang Wei picked up the secure line and dialed the 606 Institute in Xizhou.
"Lu Xiao, this is Yang Wei. Mission accomplished. The ground test of the WS-15S was a massive success, with excellent data. We will complete the final engine delivery within two weeks!"
