Volume One, Chapter 30: The Fire
Just as everything had finally been put in order—
“What kind of shop is this? Fortune-telling and face reading? Is that for real?” A voice filled with curiosity sounded suddenly from the doorway.
At the sound, Yun Mojiu turned and looked over. There, a middle-aged woman stood at the threshold, munching on sunflower seeds as she sized up the shop with inquisitive eyes. One moment she examined the signboard above, the next she glanced around inside, her eyes darting about with lively curiosity.
Ji Wuhen wielded no blade or sword, relying solely on his fists and palms to attack. Even so, he unleashed two supreme martial arts techniques at once.
Li Zhichen felt as if his head would split apart, his limbs swollen and heavy. It was as if he had been swallowed by some monstrous beast. His mind grew hazy, lost in endless dreams. Only after an unknown span of time did a sudden brightness pierce the fog in his mind. He opened his eyes.
Ning Jiuer gripped a fistful of venomous snakes in each hand. Dozens of serpent heads hissed and flicked their tongues, their bodies shimmering with a riot of colors, a terrifying sight to behold.
The relationship between Han Ye and Li Nanxian was known only to themselves. Although Han Ying was aware as well, she would never dare breathe a word of it.
But trying to surpass the divine grace’s limit in quality simply by amassing quantity was not realistic. Instead, one should focus on increasing the chance of obtaining a superior divine grace.
Xiao Jian was beside himself with fury. He spat, “Such an evil creature would never utter a single word of truth. Today I shall avenge Jun’er, lest this fiend brings further calamity upon the martial world!” He leapt up, drawing his black iron sword, poised to strike Shangguan Yun down with a single blow.
True love is giving, is sacrifice; it expects nothing in return. Yet the moment Ouyang Jing laid eyes on Guo Peng, he could not help but want to declare his claim.
He clearly meant to invite Qu Jie to dinner, but twisted his words so it sounded like Qu Jie was treating him as a gesture of thanks. Ah! Qu Jie sighed to herself. It seemed there were more and more so-called “romance experts” in the world these days—no wonder she could not find a decent man.
Dawn had barely broken. A rooster’s crow tore apart the last shreds of night, and a beam of golden morning light spilled onto the windowsill.
The two arrived at the Drunken Immortal Tavern. Though the establishment was vast, the entire first floor stood empty, and not a single attendant was in sight. He Zhixian found it strange, but followed Shangguan Yun directly to the second floor and took a seat.
The room Liu Fei chose on the east side was right next to the fire escape. This not only provided a convenient route for retreat but also meant that, if enemies took the elevator to the forty-ninth floor and then approached via the fire stairs, Liu Fei’s acute hearing would allow him to detect them long before they arrived.
With his divine healing, Ye Chen seemed able to survive in any environment, be it freezing or scorching. The world at seventy degrees below zero posed no inconvenience to him at all. Of the entire team, only Ye Chen, Mooreya, and Lucy remained unaffected by the frigid cold.
Onlookers scrutinized the Lin sisters with curiosity, while casting incredulous glances at Liu Fei. The sedan was completely immobile—did he really intend to push it by hand and then race against the bald man?
“Our leader risked his life, giving so much for the kingdom, yet he’s only being made a baron? The Temple Alliance and the Black Armored Army fled in defeat, and in the end, a whole slew of people were promoted and rewarded. The Temple even got tens of thousands of gold coins from the kingdom as compensation. It’s just not fair!” Tokai stammered, his tongue stiff with outrage.
“No, thank you. I’ll walk back myself.” Bai He smiled as she declined, ready to part ways, when something caught her eye and she suddenly stopped in her tracks.
As noon approached, the four of them arrived at the city’s outer gate. The towering wall, built of gray-black stone, rose a full ten stories high, encircling the entire city. At intervals of ten meters, a soldier stood guard.
Ji Renjie shot her a nonchalant glance, happening to catch sight of her full bosom, her slender waist that one could span with a hand, and her shapely hips.
Since Qiandaina was taught by the Demon Queen herself, it followed that the Demon Queen’s abilities must be at least equal to her pupil’s, who had only studied under her for a few years.
From beginning to end, none of them believed that the Luming Territory could withstand their Myriad Serpent Army. Especially not with a magus from the Black Tower assisting; crushing Luming would be a trivial task.
