Chapter Forty-Nine: The Revelation
Yan Yuanqing felt a gentle warmth in his heart. Shi Yurou’s words revealed that, contrary to outward appearances, his wife had not been as indifferent or distracted toward him as she seemed during the past few years of their life together.
Instead, she had been quietly observing him all along, coming to understand him in her own way.
“Sigh, actually, I was thinking about my father… Yesterday…” Yan Yuanqing then shared with Shi Yurou some of the information he had learned from Shi Chengren the previous day.
“What? Kunlun? There’s actually an ancient treasure passed down from primordial times there? Are these things really true? It all sounds so unreliable to me!”
“Yuanqing, you haven’t been fooled by my uncle, that cunning old fox, have you? Think about it—he’s managed to deceive even the family head. Who’s to say he hasn’t tricked you this time as well?”
“In this day and age, how could ancient treasures have survived until now? After thousands of years of tomb raiding, surely everything’s been turned inside out already!”
Yan Yuanqing sighed, knowing that what Shi Yurou said was very likely.
“But this is the only clue I have, the only one connected to my father. No matter if it’s real or not, one day I have to find out for myself!”
“No matter what, even if there’s only the slightest hope, I can’t give up on my father!”
Yan Yuanqing spoke with unwavering determination, his tone revealing an unshakable faith and powerful will.
In the past, when facing Shi Yurou, Yan Yuanqing had always lacked resolve; whatever Shi Yurou said, he would simply follow. But today, Yan Yuanqing was completely different from his usual self.
Shi Yurou was momentarily taken aback.
By now, the two had returned home. Shi Yurou didn’t respond, choosing to set the matter aside for the time being.
Back in his room, Yan Yuanqing soon summoned the jade pendant carved with a dragon pattern. In recent days, he had taken to bringing out the dragon-engraved jade pendant, feeling the pulse and warmth emanating from it.
This gave Yan Yuanqing a sensation akin to being with his father, even though the feeling was so ethereal and elusive.
Yet he simply could not resist.
Suddenly, the door was pushed open.
Yan Yuanqing was about to put the jade pendant away, but Shi Yurou’s gaze had already landed on his hand. It was too late—this secret had at last been discovered by Shi Yurou.
Nevertheless, Yan Yuanqing’s expression remained calm. He made no further move to hide the pendant, watching as Shi Yurou approached.
“What… what is that?” Shi Yurou asked, her tone full of curiosity and confusion.
Having such a significant secret exposed by Shi Yurou, Yan Yuanqing found it hard to describe his feelings. But not long ago, he had finally realized that Shi Yurou genuinely cared for him, that there was true feeling between them.
Yan Yuanqing hesitated.
Had it been anyone else who discovered this secret, he was certain he could have acted without hesitation—controlling the situation, perhaps even eliminating the person if necessary.
But confronted with Shi Yurou…
“It’s just an ornament. Why did you suddenly come into my room?” he replied.
Shi Yurou was not convinced by his answer; her eyes remained fixed on the dragon-engraved jade pendant.
“There’s a small point of light at the center of that thing. I’ve never seen you take it out before. Isn’t this something your father left you?”
Shi Yurou believed she had found the crucial point.
“That’s right. But this pendant has been passed down in our family for generations; it’s not solely linked to my father.”
“It merely carries some trace of my father. So, when I miss him, I take it out and try to feel closer to him.”
“If there’s nothing else, I hope you’ll give me some privacy. At times like this, I don’t wish to be disturbed—not even by you.”
Yan Yuanqing’s gaze grew distant as he looked coldly at Shi Yurou, his voice chilly.
