Chapter 133: Who Exactly Is Standing Before Me?
In the distance, a man dressed in an earthy green military uniform walked through the courtyard gate with a broad smile. He carried a bundle of bright red items, clearly intended for his sister's upcoming wedding. Everything seemed so wonderful, filled with a vibrant, festive air.
However, Du Yun could not feel a shred of joy. As she gazed at that beaming face, she couldn't help but lose her composure. "Xiao Yi?"
"Girl, look, my son is back!" Mother Tang hurried forward, taking the items from "Xiao Yi" and chatting with him cheerfully. But Du Yun seemed unable to hear a word, as if a thunderclap were echoing incessantly in her mind.
Who was the man before her? Was it her commander, Xiao Yi, or her sister's fiancé, Tang Jun? If it were Xiao Yi, how could she allow him to marry her sister? And if it were Tang Jun, could she accept a man who looked exactly like Xiao Yi as her brother-in-law?
Du Yun’s heart was in complete turmoil. Seeing Mother Tang leading "Xiao Yi" toward her, she stood frozen, unable to move.
"Xiao Yi," Du Yun whispered instinctively.
"Eh? Girl, how did you know this lad’s name is Xiao Yi?" Mother Tang’s voice sounded with mild surprise. "I was just about to introduce you. This is your brother Tang’s comrade-in-arms, Xiao Yi from the provincial capital. He’s here specifically to be the best man for your brother Tang."
"It really is Xiao Yi?" Du Yun’s eyes widened, staring intently at him. Seeing that although he looked slightly unsettled by her gaze, his smile remained bright, her reason—which had been dazed by the sudden shock—finally began to return.
"Hello, I am Xiao Yi. 'Xiao' as in grass, and 'Yi' as in graceful." Xiao Yi, wearing a warm smile, extended his hand. His eyes and brows were filled with an indelible gentleness.
"Hello." Du Yun reached out to shake his hand. Xiao Yi’s palm was warm and dry, with slight calluses. The shape of his hand was identical to the iron-like grip of the Xiao Yi she knew, but the sensation was entirely different.
"He is my brother-in-law's comrade?" Du Yun couldn't help but confirm again. As long as it wasn't her brother-in-law, that was all that mattered; she had absolutely no interest in the drama of sisters competing for the same man.
"Yes, and he’s the best man! By the way, are you Zhi’er’s maid of honor?" Mother Tang looked at the two young people standing before her—the man tall and handsome, the woman petite and pretty. They looked like a perfect match, a truly eye-catching pair.
Mother Tang looked at them with affection, though she felt a bit conflicted. This pair of best man and maid of honor were so outstanding, would they overshadow her own son and daughter-in-law?
"Yes, I am." Upon learning that this man was truly just her brother-in-law's comrade, not her brother-in-law himself, Du Yun finally relaxed and a smile returned to her face.
"You called my name just now. Do you know me?" Xiao Yi’s face remained lit with a faint smile, his voice gentle and low, making one feel as if bathed in a spring breeze.
"I... hehe... I’ve just heard of you." How could Du Yun dare to tell the truth? To say she knew an Xiao Yi from another world who looked exactly like him? That would be inviting disaster. It was better to simply deny it.
"Oh, I see." Xiao Yi smiled at her words and didn't press further, though the flicker of doubt in his eyes revealed that he didn't quite believe her; he was simply being considerate.
Xiao Yi was a soldier who specialized in reconnaissance. He was accustomed to paying attention to everything around him, including the reactions and expressions of others.
When he first entered, upon seeing him, Du Yun’s face had gone deathly pale, and she had instinctively called his name. Such an action meant she certainly knew him, and there was something about him that caused her fear or dread.
Later, after Mother Tang introduced his background, her expression recovered, and there was even a sense of relief, as if she had survived a great ordeal. It seemed her lapse in composure was indeed related to him—not just to him as a person, but to his identity.
Thinking of the glistening tears that had welled up in Du Yun’s eyes—tears she had stubbornly refused to let fall—the usually gentle and meticulous Xiao Yi felt a sudden, inexplicable surge of restlessness and impulse. He began to search his memory, wondering if he had truly met her before.
"I’ll take these things inside first. Brother Tang is still in the car!" Xiao Yi suppressed his internal discomfort and decided to leave the scene for now. He had once suffered a severe injury and lost his memory; perhaps he really did know this girl. But this would have to be handled slowly; there was no need to rush.
"Okay!" Du Yun hastily stepped aside. She stood in place, watching Xiao Yi’s retreating back. Even though she knew this Xiao Yi was not *her* Xiao Yi, she couldn't help but be drawn to him. If her Xiao Yi smiled with such gentleness, he would probably be even more handsome, right?
"Girl, you think Xiao Yi is good-looking too, don't you?" Mother Tang, seeing Du Yun gazing longingly at Xiao Yi’s back, teased her with a smile.
Women of Mother Tang’s age loved nothing more than seeing young couples find their happiness. Especially since the young man was her son’s comrade and the girl was her daughter-in-law’s sister, her enthusiasm doubled. She immediately began to detail Xiao Yi’s history.
Xiao Yi was in the same unit as Tang Jun. Tang Jun was a company commander, and Xiao Yi was a reconnaissance team leader. Despite his rank, he came from a prestigious military family. If not for an injury sustained in battle that left him with amnesia and took two or three years to recover, he would have been a battalion commander by now, let alone a company commander.
"Xiao Yi is such a good child. Even though he comes from a high-ranking family, he has no airs at all. He’s been helping with all the chaotic wedding preparations, always smiling at everyone and so sweet-spoken..." Mother Tang prattled on about Xiao Yi’s virtues, but Du Yun didn't take it to heart.
This Xiao Yi was not her Xiao Yi. Although they were similar in age and appearance, and even their backgrounds were alike, they were definitely not the same person.
Her Xiao Yi was a cold man. Even when he was kind, he was kind in silence, with a stern face. Getting him to say a kind word or offer a smile required immense effort.
This Xiao Yi, while clearly a good person, was warm-hearted; he wore a smile for everyone he met, standing in stark contrast to her Xiao Yi.
For some reason, after reaching this conclusion, Du Yun felt a hollow ache in her heart and an urgent desire to return to the starship to see her own Xiao Yi.
