Chapter 24: The Superpower of Remote Object Retrieval
“Oh my goodness!” As soon as Du Yun thought about the problem, she trembled as she ran her hands over her body, and sure enough, from head to toe, she wasn’t wearing a single stitch!
What should she do? Her mind was blank. Her clothes were still in the zombie world, and there was no way to get them back now. The clothes in her storage compartment couldn’t be worn directly either—not only would she have no way to explain where they came from, but their style was completely off!
Luckily, she had a spare pair of shorts and a camisole in her storage compartment. Du Yun quickly slipped them on. One episode of exposing herself to the world was humiliating enough; if it happened again, she doubted she had the thick skin to endure it.
“Douzhi, Douzhi!” After pondering for a while, Du Yun decided to call Douzhi out to discuss the matter. Hiding wouldn’t help; the loss of her clothes wasn’t something she could ignore, and she couldn’t just stay in bed till morning. Once the quilt was lifted, everything would be revealed!
“Oh, what am I going to do? My clothes are still in the zombie world, and I can’t go back now. You need to get me something to wear!” Du Yun said anxiously to Douzhi.
“I see quite a few clothes within a fifty-meter radius. Do you want them? I can teleport them into your storage compartment,” Douzhi replied after a moment’s thought, feeling somewhat responsible. If he hadn’t brought Du Yun back so quickly, maybe she could have changed into her clothes after everything was done.
Du Yun had no idea what Douzhi was thinking. If she knew that her intelligent assistant was pondering such indecent things, she’d probably cough up blood.
“Fifty meters? Isn’t that just my house and the neighbors on either side?” Du Yun was a little speechless, but there was no better solution. She gritted her teeth and nodded, asking Douzhi for help. Whatever it took, she had to be able to get out of bed.
“Alright!” Douzhi’s voice was full of energy. He scanned the area and began teleporting clothes into Du Yun’s storage compartment.
The first set was a yellowish-brown outfit, both in color and style vastly different from what Du Yun usually wore. Although she’d never seen such clothing before, the memories from the original owner in her mind immediately told her it was a burial outfit!
“This is a burial shroud, not meant for the living! Can’t you do better?” Du Yun was eagerly waiting for clothes to wear, only to have Douzhi bring her something like this—was he trying to make her suffer?
“I’ll change it… I’ll find another one…” Though Douzhi didn’t know what a burial shroud was, he had access to the entire database and quickly searched it out, metaphorical black lines appearing on his forehead. The prettiest and cleanest clothes among the three households weren’t even meant for the living; he couldn’t make sense of it.
“How about this one?” Douzhi teleported another set—a bright red cotton top and blue trousers. It looked newly made, clean and neat. It wasn’t as pretty as the dresses in Du Yun’s storage compartment, but it was comfortable enough.
“Where did you get this?” Du Yun looked over the clothes and thought they were nice, but asked to be safe.
“From the cabinet in this room,” Douzhi sent a picture, showing the cabinet in the room where Du Yun was.
“Oh, then it’ll do!” Since it was from her own room, it wouldn’t raise issues about anything outside, and Du Yun happily made her decision.
With her worries settled, sleepiness washed over Du Yun, and she didn’t even realize that Douzhi’s ability to fetch things could be considered a superpower of remote retrieval.
When Du Yun closed her eyes and opened them again, it was already the next morning.
“Yun, wake up!” Her mother had already started her daily chores. Seeing that it was getting late, she woke Du Yun before heading back to the kitchen.
“Alright!” Du Yun responded, stretching with satisfaction. She felt that days without fear, where she could sleep soundly, were simply wonderful.
Du Yun took the clothes Douzhi found yesterday from her storage compartment. As she was putting them on, her mother returned to the room, looked at her outfit, and gave her an exasperated glare. “Yun, didn’t I tell you these clothes were made for your sister’s wedding? Why are you wearing them again?”
“Mother…” Du Yun paused, her mind in chaos last night, only thinking she couldn’t go around naked and forgetting that clothes were limited, especially good clothes, which were accounted for and easily recognized. She was left speechless.
“‘Mother’ nothing. When you get married, I’ll make new clothes for you too. Put these away for your sister,” her mother urged, worried her second daughter, who rarely wore new clothes, would feel upset.
“Mother…” Du Yun was on the verge of tears. Apart from that outfit, all she had left was a pair of shorts and a camisole. “I can’t wear my clothes from yesterday…”
“Can’t wear them? If they’re torn, give them to me and I’ll mend them!” Her mother didn’t understand, untied her apron and was ready to fix the clothes, but Du Yun couldn’t hand them over.
“Mother, the clothes are gone…” Du Yun said dryly, nearly in tears.
“Gone? Weren’t you wearing them just fine last night? You wasteful child!” Her mother’s mood soured at the news, but after a few complaints, she rummaged through the cabinet and found another set of clothes.
“Here, I was planning to give these to you on your birthday, but seeing you like this, you’ll have to wear them now.” She handed Du Yun a set of coarse cloth clothing, giving her a glare as she spoke.
“Mother, you’re so good!” Du Yun finally breathed a sigh of relief, hugging her mother’s arm and nuzzling her shoulder with a sweet smile.
“Alright, hurry up and change, then come help me in the kitchen!” Her mother, charmed by her daughter’s affection, smiled as she shook out her apron and left the room.
Du Yun changed into the coarse cloth clothes, taking in the aroma of food from the kitchen. She remembered the bag of rice and several bags of cornmeal in her storage compartment, and felt much more secure.
At this moment, Du Yun was immensely grateful for her decision in the zombie world. For others, the food they couldn’t take with them would just be left to rot, but for Du Yun, it was enough to feed her family for several months.
Though her sense of belonging to this home wasn’t as strong as if she’d grown up here, the doting mother, caring sister, and her tough-yet-soft grandmother made her heart feel warm.
Patting her hungry stomach, Du Yun headed toward the kitchen.
Indeed, when you have food in your pocket, there’s nothing to worry about!
