Chapter 79: I Am the Live-in Son-in-law

Honored Guest A gentle breeze carries a light rain. 2802 words 2026-03-20 11:44:39

Then she suddenly stood up and raised her glass to Chen Yu.

“Mr. Chen, I’ve been friends with Zhuyun since childhood, but she wasn’t thoughtful enough—even when she got married, she didn’t bother to tell me. Still, I don’t blame her; everyone has their reasons. Today, I’m just happy to see her find a home. So this toast is to you: don’t let her down!”

“A superstar like Su Feifei is taking the initiative to toast—looks like we shouldn’t lag behind.”

They all thought the same: Su Feifei was a famous star, their friend as well. Now, let’s see what expression Zhuyun’s husband will have.

Chen Yu only smiled faintly, lifted his glass, and drank with her. His face remained expressionless.

Everyone watched his reaction, some already tipsy. Could it be he didn’t recognize Su Feifei? She was a celebrity, after all. They’d even specifically reminded him beforehand; why did he show no reaction at all?

Because they were familiar with Su Feifei, they weren’t as excited as ordinary people might be when meeting a star. But how could someone have no reaction whatsoever? Could it be he didn’t even know the famous celebrity? Was he really a young man?

Zhao Lan was secretly amused. This son-in-law of the Shen family truly had no sense for the occasion; he couldn’t appreciate a famous painting, nor did he recognize a popular star. What kind of person was he?

Zhuyun was a little stunned. She’d planned to quietly introduce her celebrity friend to Chen Yu, but now Su Feifei had already toasted him, speaking quite candidly. Even if he wasn’t a fan, he should have heard her name. Had he really decided to play the mute? Even if so, shouldn’t he at least show a bit of surprise, instead of acting like a fool?

She wanted to pinch him, just to see if she could get a reaction.

Meanwhile, as Chen Yu clinked glasses with Su Feifei, he subtly used his spiritual power to sense the jade bracelet on her wrist. He quickly discerned it was an extremely sinister artifact. At first, it might actually enhance someone’s constitution, calm the mind and spirit—but that was only its appearance. In truth, it silently drained the wearer’s vitality, channeling it elsewhere. Prolonged use could even prove fatal. Was someone trying to harm her, or were malicious people spreading such artifacts for some unknown purpose?

He had no intention of meddling, though. He was only here today to accompany Zhuyun to meet her childhood friends; after this, they would go their separate ways. There was no need to get involved, and even if he wanted to, nobody would believe him. Better to avoid unnecessary trouble.

Although everyone felt uncomfortable with Chen Yu’s indifference toward Su Feifei, she didn’t seem to mind. In fact, she was a little pleased. If Chen Yu had acted like her other fans, becoming excited and frantic, she would have been caught off guard—hence the oversized sunglasses she always wore.

Or, if he hadn’t acted overtly but his eyes betrayed fanaticism, as Zhuyun’s friend it would have made her feel uneasy. Now, with Chen Yu behaving calmly, it felt like ordinary interactions, and she relaxed.

This was precisely the effect she wanted. Otherwise, why would she have slipped away from her manager? Sitting here, they were all just friends; she wasn’t a star anymore.

But others didn’t see it that way. Seeing a celebrity in person, not recognizing her meant you were either backward or dim-witted.

Chen Yu continued to say little, not even offering polite gestures. Everyone had toasted him, yet he showed no intent to reciprocate. They’d praised him before, but what kind of husband had Zhuyun found?

Zhao Lan was smug. This was exactly the outcome she wanted; the cheap son-in-law was truly ignorant and unsophisticated.

“Zhuyun, you can’t blame me. You found such a husband, and the most infuriating thing is that when I visited your family, he didn’t regard me at all and even spoke rudely. None of this is my fault!”

“By the way, Zhuyun, what does your husband do for work?” Some grew curious about this man.

With that question, everyone looked at Zhuyun.

She shifted awkwardly. “He hasn’t found a job yet.”

As soon as she said it, the men exchanged disdainful glances. So he lived off his wife.

The women, meanwhile, shook their heads in secret, sighing for Zhuyun. Such an outstanding woman, yet she married a man so lacking—even without a job. He must be good at winning women over, but they hadn’t seen him woo his wife at all; his face was blank, as if paralyzed.

“Zhuyun, I’m planning to expand the lingerie market in Jiangnan. Are you interested?” the president of a lingerie company asked.

Zhuyun thought for a moment. “I’m already busy with my cosmetics company. I don’t think I have the capacity to handle lingerie in Jiangnan as well.”

“Your husband doesn’t have a job, right? You can’t always support him; let him take on some responsibility!” The lingerie company president, evidently close to Zhuyun, spoke directly.

Chen Yu glanced at her. Though her appearance couldn’t rival his wife’s, her features were finely crafted. With a touch of makeup and a professional suit, she seemed competent and carried an air of a strong woman, very much Zhuyun’s equal.

“He…” Zhuyun almost blurted out that he couldn’t do anything, but quickly changed course: “He still has some studies to complete, so I told him to finish school before helping me at the company!” She smiled softly, displaying the image of a virtuous wife.

“It seems Zhuyun really knows how to care for her husband. Mr. Chen, what are you studying?” a young woman teased.

“Society,” Chen Yu replied with a gentle smile.

Everyone was stunned, including Zhuyun. Wasn’t he at Jiangcheng University? Why did he say “society”? She quickly realized what he meant. Her face tightened, and under the table, she couldn’t resist pinching him—but it felt like squeezing a ball of cotton, and he didn’t react at all.

“Haha, Mr. Chen has quite a sense of humor!” The men quickly caught on and burst out laughing. In their eyes, he seemed even more useless.

The women lost their composure, laughing themselves breathless.

Suddenly, Su Feifei spoke solemnly: “Actually, aren’t we all pursuing the curriculum of society? We all live in this society, and only by understanding it can we live better.”

The laughter stopped immediately.

Had those words come from Chen Yu, they would have laughed even harder. But Su Feifei, a star with much experience in the entertainment world, understood the struggle to survive and the elimination of the weak; her insight into survival was deeper. So they fell silent.

Zhao Lan glanced coolly at Su Feifei. “Su, I know the pressures of being a celebrity are great, but let’s not talk about unpleasant things. Let’s get back to our earlier topic. Son-in-law of the Shen family, when will you finish your studies and help Zhuyun?”

She emphasized “son-in-law,” making sure everyone heard.

Chen Yu looked at her calmly, maintaining his silence. As for Su Feifei’s words in his defense, he felt a small gratitude and would later advise her to discard the bracelet.

“Son-in-law?” a young woman asked curiously. “Zhao Lan, you’ve said that twice today. Does anyone even use that term anymore?”

Prompted by her question, everyone was puzzled.

Zhuyun grew anxious. She certainly hadn’t told them that Chen Yu was the live-in son-in-law; if they found out, she’d be mocked again. Zhao Lan was really something. Zhuyun suddenly felt that this gathering was becoming problematic.

“Yes, I am the live-in son-in-law of the Shen family.”
